European Championships will provide vital Henley Royal Regatta 2016 clues

This weekend the European Rowing Championships take place in Brandenburg, Germany, with plenty of crews on show who could play a major role at the Henley Regatta 2016.

The European Championship Regatta has once again attracted some of the finest rowers from 34 different countries set to compete. The opening day of the three day event saw scorching temperatures and a slight breeze, perfect for rowing.

Great Britain enjoy success on opening day – will these stars be at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2016?

Team Great Britain enjoyed an incredibly successful opening day with several teams qualifying for the finals of a range of events.

In the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls (Heats) Jamie Kirkwood was unable to catch Daniel Matyasovszki of Hungary who got off to a flying start, but the Brit was still able to qualify. Alan Sinclair and Stewart Innes qualified in first place in the Men’s Pair (Heats) where they face the likes of Serbia, Russia and Poland.

Sam Scrimgeour and Joel Cassells were in fine form in the Lightweight Men’s Pair and will face Spain in the next round. In the Lightweight Men’s Four the British crew made it all look so easy fending off the challenges and making smooth progress.

The Women’s Single Sculls saw Mathilda Hodgkons-Byrne lose her lead in the final metres to Ireland’s Sanita Puspure, but still progressed to the next round. While Olympic champions Charlotte Taylor and Katherine Copeland made short work of their heat in the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls.

In the Women’s Pair, world record holders Helen Glover and Heather Stanning produced a good performance on their first appearance of the season, winning in plenty of style. While the Women’s Eight stole the lead late on to qualify ahead of Romania.

These victories set up a thrilling weekend and heres hoping the British teams succeed ahead of the Henley Regatta 2016.

International rowing season begins ahead of Henley Regatta 2016

The first international rowing race of the season took place in Varese, Italy which featured several crews who will be looking to make it to the 2016 Rio Olympics and of course the Henley Royal Regatta 2016.

In crisp conditions perfect for rowing the some of the world’s finest athletes looked to test just how effective their off-season training had been, with anticipation and excitement in the air, the racing began and didn’t disappoint.

Great Britain Men Pair qualify for Sunday finals

In the Men’s Pair races heat three, Great Britain’s Matthew Tarrant and Nathaniel Reilly-O’Donnell, pcked up where they left off last season. The pair won the Men’s Coxed Pair at the World Rowing Championships 2015 and although they were narrowly defeated by Serbia they still moved into the next round.

In heat two the Netherlands pair of Roel Braas and Mitchel Steenman crossed the line in first place while Spain held off the challenge of Russia. In the opening heat South Africa just got the better of Italy to qualify for the final.

Potential Henley Regatta stars shine for Great Britain

Great Britain also enjoyed some fantastic success in the Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls as Zak Lee-Green and Jamie Kirkwood qualified in heat three alongside Ireland’s pair of Gary and Paul O’Donovan started to show their great reserves of stamina to take first place.

Former World Champions James Thompson and John Smith of South Africa set a scorching pace in heat two to defeat Niels van Zandweghe and Tim Brys of Belgium in second. While reigning Olympic Champions, Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist of Denmark made light work of the opening heat and led from the start to beat Switzerland.

The finals for all of the big races take place on Sunday, will we see any of these fantastic teams competing at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2016? Let’s hope we can celebrate some wins for Britain on Monday.
